Living Garden Roofs
There are many reasons why a green roof makes sense, including:
- Replacing lost land that takes place through building
- Protection against flash flooding as the living roof absorbs the water
- Give a house very good insulation, reducing heat loss
- Encourage and aid local wildlife, providing new habitats
What you will need to create a living roof
- A Waterproof underlay is laid onto the roof and fixed in place
- Soil or crushed stones are applied on top of the underlay
- Then Sedum mats and wildflowers can be added – you can get these from your local garden centre for less than £50 depending on size and coverage
- Try not to use a living roof pitch greater than 40 degrees gradient as these are more problematic to maintain and therefore more expensive.
